I have a question, for those of us who are 1099 contractors, can we apply for an EIN with the IRS? I asked because every time I get a W-9 form to fill out, I have to put my SSN and I would feel more comfortable using an EIN instead.

Yes you can. It will identify your business acct, tax returns and documents, even if you have no employees.
